4×4 vs 5×5 Board

The 2048 5x5 Relaxed board adds nine spaces while preserving exactly the same number merging game. Extra room makes awkward spawns more forgiving and gives long chains more time to develop. It suits relaxed play and higher-score runs, but its Best Score is stored separately so it never replaces your 4×4 record. You can combine either board size with Classic or Power of 3.
How Tile Merging Works
Every merge doubles a tile: 2 and 2 become 4, two 4s become 8, and the pattern continues. The merged value is also added to your Score. Several pairs can merge in one move, but each tile can participate only once during that move. For example, sliding 2, 2, 2, 2 to the left produces 4, 4—not a single 8. On a later move, those two 4 tiles may combine.
This order matters when three matching tiles share a line. The pair nearest the direction of movement merges first. Learning to predict the exact result helps you protect open cells and place large values where they will not trap smaller tiles.
Combo Feedback
When one swipe creates two or more merges, a brief Combo message shows the number of pairs joined. Combo feedback is visual only: it does not add a bonus or change the standard score, so every point still comes directly from the values you create.
2048 Strategy Tips
A reliable opening is to keep your largest tile in one corner and avoid swiping away from that edge unless the board requires it. Build a descending chain beside the corner so new pairs have a clear route toward your strongest tile. Two or three preferred directions are easier to control than constantly changing direction.
Watch empty space as carefully as your score. A quick merge may look useful but can split related numbers across the board. Before moving, check which tile will appear at the front of each row, whether a useful pair stays aligned, and how many open cells remain. When space becomes tight, choose the move that creates several future options rather than the move with the largest immediate gain.
What Happens When You Reach 2048?
The first time the selected target appears, the board pauses and displays a success message: 2048 in Classic or 1536 in Power of 3. The celebration appears only once for that game, so later moves remain uninterrupted while you work toward 4096, 3072, and beyond. Reaching the target does not guarantee that the board is safe. Large tiles occupy the same amount of space as small ones but are harder to match, so keep supporting values organized after you continue. A clean corner chain gives you the best chance to turn the milestone into a longer high-score run.
